Valentine’s Stress?

What is it about Valentine’s Day that turns some people into nutcases?

I was talking with my husband about it last night, and I think it’s just the marketing of it all. While Valentine’s Day has been around a long time, and isn’t really just a “Hallmark holiday,” many people think of it that way because of how much the Valentine’s Day card is emphasized.

It’s even worse than that now. Near as I can tell from the commercials, it’s a jeweler’s holiday now. Just watch all those commericals. “Buy this necklace, those earrings,” etc. to make it a perfect Valentine’s Day.

I really feel for a lot of men. There’s serious pressure to spend a bunch of money on Valentine’s Day. Meantime the women in their lives don’t have to do all that much. They might, but the expectations are often just not that high.
For women, the pressure seems to mostly be in getting a date if one isn’t readily available. Just thinking about rushing into a romantic relationship just to have someone by your side on a particular day has always struck me as silly.

Just think about it. Do you really need more stress in your life? Do you really want to worry about who cares about who more or stick with the wrong person just so someone is there? Get real!

Valentine’s Day is wonderful if both parties understand what is expected and have real feelings. If there’s nothing there emotionally, what are you really doing to yourself? Have a little self respect and enjoy Valentine’s Day for real, not just for public appearances.

And make it fun!
