The True Value of Public Libraries
People living in Jackson County, OR, are going to be learning the true value of public libraries very soon. You see, due to lack of funding, theirs are about to close.
This is truly horrendous so far as I’m concerned. Libraries are vital to many people. Children use them to research class projects - and don’t assume school libraries are always sufficient. Toddlers and preschoolers enjoy story times. It’s internet access for those who can’t afford it at home. It’s a way for people to learn without having to buy books they may not be able to afford. And in small towns libraries can be community meeting places.
I love books. I own far, far more than most people. Matter of fact, I have limited wall space to decorate due to the number of bookshelves filled with books in my home. And I can spend hours in a library just enjoying the selection. I can’t imagine living in an area without libraries.
Let’s be honest here. The Internet is wonderful for finding all kinds of informatin, but it’s not the most reliable source. Finding reliable resources online is incredibly challenging. The Internet is far from replacing libraries.
I don’t know what can be done for these libraries. I hope a solution for them is found. Otherwise the people of Jackson County will be suffering from the lack.
