The Combination of Faiths is Fascinating
I read a story on MSN about a couple not wanting their child’s blood tested, as per state law in Nebraska, because it goes against their religious beliefs. Fine, I have no problem with that. Most states don’t absolutely require such testing; they merely strongly recommend it.
But what caught my eye was that their beliefs combine Christian Fundamentalism with some aspects of Scientology.
I must say, that is an odd sounding combination to me. It’s just hard for me to picture a fundamentalist Christian outlook blending with that of Scientology.
Somehow, and it’s not clear that this is a part of either faith, the couple has determined that a baby is in pain for 3.5 days after birth. The Scientologists believe in being silent around pain, so they wanted it quiet and they didn’t want to increase the baby’s pain.
Now frankly, I agree with fighting the requirement. It should be a personal decision. Parents should be given the information they need to choose or not choose the test, so long as they understand what it is about their child’s health they are risking by refusing.
And I’m not even trying to mock their beliefs. I don’t understand the combination is all. That’s just simple confusion as it’s contrary to what I understand of each.
