Spontaneous Playground Combustion

Sounds funny, but it really happened. You can see the surveillance video.

It’s not common, but if you combine cheap mulch, recent rain, and really hot temperatures, apparently you can get a spontaneous fire.

I find it interesting to see how parents react. There are some who are saying they won’t take their kids to playgrounds with mulch anymore. But I suspect just keeping shoes on the kids’ feet is enough. I’m pretty sure it takes a little time to become a raging inferno. Or if it bugs you that much, don’t go on exceptionally hot days, especially if it rained recently.

My personal favorites are the playgrounds with the rubber bases. Not too kind to knees if you fall on it, but fun to walk on.

By the way, this can happen at homes too. Just have organic materials decomposing for too long, creating too much heat, and a fire can happen. Just one of those reasons to turn the compost pile, I guess.
