Blogging about whatever I feel like

Oooooooh!

I’ve been following this story for a time on my own, but I guess it’s about to open. A skywalk extending over the Grand Canyon, that is. With a glass bottom so you can see straight doooooown.

It’s sounds so amazing yet terrifying. I wouldn’t recommend it for those with a deep fear of heights. I think I could cope, since while heights do bug me, so long as there’s a good rail or barrier and something solid under my feet, I’m fine.

Just imagine. This skywalk is built on the rim and extends 70 feet out over the canyon. The canyon floor is 4000 feet beneath you. That’s twice the height as the world’s tallest buildings right now.

I tend to agree with the tribe about building this. They don’t get much help from the outside, so if this helps them, it’s something they need to thrive. I do hope they have good plans in place for the increased traffic, as the environmental damage could be an issue. But given that the one thing they can easily do with their land is share the view, this is an amazing way to do it.

While I can understand that some environmentalists worry about the canyon becoming nothing more than a tourist trap, you do have to face that these people have few ways to bring in money. I hope they can manage the environmental side well, and I like to think the motivation is there. The scenic beauty is the one selling point of the area.

I won’t be making it out there anytime soon. No budget for travel. But I know that someday my husband and I will be making that Grand Canyon trip as a reminder of our honeymoon, that being where we started out the honeymoon. But probably not for a few years yet.
