You have to love automatic billing, especially when it’s done for the United States Government. How else could you end up with nearly $1,000,000 in shipping charges for two $0.19 washers?
Especially when the insane billing has only been going on from 1997-2006 and totals over $20,000,000. Just a drop in the bucket, right? Who checks the statement anyhow?
The contractor was taking advantage of an automatic approval system that was put in place to get supplies to troops quickly. And other contractors are being investigated for similar frauds.
Your tax dollars at work.

Why are these toys just so tempting for me? I found a home laser show that I’m ever so tempted by. I know it doesn’t do anything other than neat light designs, but that’s enough for my tastes.
Besides, the kids would love it too, I’m sure of that.
This one produces 100 geometric patterns and 3-D effects. I’m in geek mode today, so that just sounds fun. I like lasers. Sounds simple, but there it is.
The site has pictures of what this projector does. Very nice, looks fun for parties or just because. An excuse to let your inner geek out… although in my case my inner geek tends to run rampant rather than hide.

- It’s miserably hot today.
- Humid too.
- Can’t believe I had to turn on the air conditioning at 10:30 this morning, but it was already nearly 90 degrees F in the house.
- Time to refill the kiddie pool.
- My poor, poor garden. Hard to keep up with the watering just now.
- Sure hope they get my dress for the wedding finished by tomorrow. All it needs is a little shoulder strap work.
- Tailor was supposed to be done yesterday but the store forgot to give it to her.
- I hate shoe shopping. At least when the popular shoe styles all have heels higher than I will wear or lower than I need to keep from having the dress hemmed.
- Thank goodness for online shoe shopping.
- At least things are coming together for my son’s speech therapy.
- I feel like baking.
- Lemon meringue pie or cinnamon rolls? Decisions, decisions!
- I’m feeling really random right now.

Sounds funny, but it really happened. You can see the surveillance video.
It’s not common, but if you combine cheap mulch, recent rain, and really hot temperatures, apparently you can get a spontaneous fire.
I find it interesting to see how parents react. There are some who are saying they won’t take their kids to playgrounds with mulch anymore. But I suspect just keeping shoes on the kids’ feet is enough. I’m pretty sure it takes a little time to become a raging inferno. Or if it bugs you that much, don’t go on exceptionally hot days, especially if it rained recently. Read the rest of this entry »
I have this webcam. It’s hiding behind the printer right now because we haven’t installed it yet.
My sister bought it for us as an easy way to keep in contact. That’s nice when you’re 1000 miles from family, as she is. But I just haven’t gotten around to it.
Seeing my sister-in-law visit recently made me realize just how much I need to install that thing and sign up for Skype
. She uses it to keep in contact with her Navy husband, who will be deployed to Iraq in another month or so. It lets their daughter still see her daddy.
Skype is a free download, and you can use it to call other people on Skype for free. But it can also be used to call people on their telephones, so even your friends who aren’t so into technology can get a call from you. Keep it within the United States and Canada, and it’s under $3/month. I think that beats pretty much everyone else’s long distance rates. Read the rest of this entry »
Oh, that evolutionary family tree! We just can’t figure it out!
A recent discovery has made it clear that Homo erectus was more apelike than previously believed. It also looks like Homo habilis was not the ancestor to Homo erectus.
Guess we’ll have to tell the whole Homo habilis line that they can’t come to the family reunion. Unless of course we’re inviting more extended family, since habilis is more a sister line than an ancestor, by all appearances now.
