Roomba, Roomba, Broomba!

I think having a Roomba would be lots of fun. I’m thinking that after staring at the cereal my kids crushed into the carpet today. Be nice to have something else take care of that mess for me.

Roomba Scheduler Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

The who concept just sounds nice. Tell the vacuum to handle the job of cleaning the floor. All you have to do is keep the floor clean enough for the vacuum to do it’s job.

Of course, I do have another solution. We have one of those cordless floor sweepers, which is light enough for the kids to use, and does a surprisingly good job. It’s great being able to teach them so young to be responsible for their own messes.

But I still want the Roomba! It’s just neat!

Thursday Thirteen - 13 Things Keeping Me From Getting Enough Sleep

What more needs be said. As a mom I often run short on sleep. But it’s not just being a mom that does it.

  1. Yes, the kids.
Nightmares, blankets everywhere, random wails for no reason at all. But of course it means waking up in the middle of the night.
  2. Working too late.
One of the troubles with working at home with young children. My best working hours are at night.
  3. Getting up too early.
The other side of the coin. You didn’t think my kids let me sleep in, did you?
  4. My husband.
Do I really need to explain this? I thought not.
  5. My night guard.
It’s a dental thing to prevent grinding of the teeth. I’m still getting used to the dratted thing and don’t sleep very well with it in. But I can tell I feel better in the morning, as grinding teeth at night can lead to muscle pains in the neck and shoulders.
  6. Surfing the Internet.
Come on. You know I don’t work every night. But getting to bed early is tough.
  7. Reading too much.
My way of winding down at night. But it’s all too easy to get sucked into a good book.
  8. Neighbor’s car alarm.
    Grrr!
  9. Enjoying the peace and quiet.
Sometimes it’s nice being the only one awake.
  10. Too busy thinking up new ideas.
And of course forgetting 99% by morning.
  11. Warm weather.
Some nights it’s just hot enought to make sleeping difficult.
  12. Trying to finish a Thursday 13 on Wednesday night.
Knowing that there are still somewhere over 100 people who have finished and posted before me.
  13. Not knowing when to quit trying.
Thank goodness I can quit trying to think of ideas for this one right now.

Wasting Away on the Web

There’s something just kind of fun about surfing the Internet. Especially when you don’t have a particular goal in mind. Just wandering around, clicking on what looks interesting, maybe trying something like StumbleUpon to find unusual sites you aren’t going to find any other way.

There’s just something fun about being online.

You can wander about. Keeping it family friendly or not, depending on your preferences. Always aware that some sites aren’t so safe for your computer, but having fun reading things you never thought you’d hear of.

Such as roaches drooling on command. That’s quite the mental picture, isn’t it?

How did we cope without the Internet? Sometimes it seems hard to imagine. Just staring at the television, whatever was on was what you could watch. Unless you rented a video or something. Read the rest of this entry »

The Salt Mummy

Just one of those amazing things about salt - it’s quite the preservative. And so a 3rd century mummy has been found buried in an old salt mine.

These mummies aren’t all that rare - after all, salt does a pretty good job as a preservative, and salt mine is bound to have the occasional collapse, especially in ancient times. Six salt mummies have been found in this particular mine so far.

Computers Are Just So Hard to Understand!

At least for some people. I’m pretty good with them or so I like to think. So I had to laugh at this long list of computer stupidities.

Here’s one of my favorites:

I was working at a help desk, and, thankfully, my co-worker took this particular call. A man nervously called saying that he couldn’t print his proposal due out that day, because WordPerfect was reporting an error that his fonts were missing. My co-worker told the gentleman that we’d send somebody right up. Apparently there was quite a back log, though, and no one could get there fast enough for him. He had continually called throughout the day asking for his call to be expedited. Finally, at the end of the day, his secretary called and asked, urgently, “Could you PLEASE send somebody up as quickly as possible? He opened the computer with a screwdriver and is looking for his missing fonts.”

Oooooh! I Like Antique Jewelry!

On finding out about this site, how could I not blog about it? I spent six years working in the jewelry industry, and while I didn’t work with antique or estate jewelry, I did develop a definite taste for it.

Now if only it were within my budget.

So I can envy these guys who work as estate diamond buyers. It just has to be fascinating, especially when a really great piece comes in.

It was fun wandering the site. I saw a really interesting diamond and ruby lute pin. The selection of opal jewelry was interesting too. I do love good opal, and it is so hard to find. I played around in various other sections too… gemstones of the quality they’re dealing with are generally not easy to find.

Alas, I had to depart their website and be on my best behavior. Which is so hard to do when I see such outstanding estate jewelry.
