To Boldly Go Where No Smart Dust Has Gone Before

So I’m on a Star Trek kick today. Honest, I can quit any time I want to!

But it just seemed appropriate when reading about using tiny, flexible chips to explore strange new worlds… err, other planets.  Read the rest of this entry »

PayPerPost Acquires… Who?

PayPerPost loves doing this to we Posties. Announce that they have an announcement coming up, then have us speculate about it. This time it’s that they have acquired some company, and they want us to guess who and the impact on the Posties.

So let’s see… who could they have acquired? Google? Nah, too big. Me? Nononononono!!!! I need my freedom!

OK, too small too.

In other words, I haven’t the foggiest notion.

Let’s see… why would they do this?

To drive the Posties nuts again? That’s a distinct possibility. Except many seem to be there already.

Well, it probably has to do with the ability to drive traffic. That’s a goal of theirs, after all. Drive traffic, drive Posties crazy. It’s all a part of the master plan.

Uh, did I just say “master plan”? Honest guys, I don’t know anything about a master plan! I’m just babbling!

Well, I guess we’re just going to have to wait until next week to see what the real announcement is, crazed ravings aside. We’ll have to see if it causes as much talk as the last time they tried something like this. There are just so many great possibilities, and finding out the real answer will no doubt generate a lot of talk.

Shields Up!

It’s not quite Star Trek shields, as I understand it, but scientists have developed a magnetic shielding system that has the potential to protect astronauts from radiation.

Star Trek comments aside (think I’ll skip those, make your own), this sounds really great for space exploration if it works well.

Over on Slashdot, many people pointed out that this shield is more like the deflector dish than the shields themselves. Either way, it’s still pretty neat.

Would You Do an Online Memorial?

When a loved one dies, you often want to remember them as best you can. Online memorials have become a way to do so.

Setting up an online memorial is very easy. You can add all kinds of information, depending on what you want to share and how creative you want to be. It can be something your family can look at and remember.

The site also offers recommendations on coping with grief. Grief can be such an individual process it can be easy to feel like you aren’t reacting correctly somehow.

Seattle, WA. – The passing of a loved one is difficult but can bring many an opportunity to find meaning and strength. Registry of Life.com – a new Web site developed by clinical psychologist Dr. Wayne Dees – provides an interactive way to share memories, stories, and photos of loved ones long after they are gone.

Registry of Life.com is an online memorial honoring and celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Providing a link from the past to the present, the Registry provides a legacy in words, pictures and even music accessible by family, friends and future generations.

www.registryoflife.com allows members to create a personal URL for their loved ones and is an easy and beautiful way to continue the legacy of those closest to their hearts. Members can create a customized Web site that includes a photo album with slideshow, a life timeline, music, customized design templates, and a guestbook. It also provides optional password protection to allow personal memories to stay personal. The one-time fee opens the door to a lifetime dedication and allows families and friends to upload memories, share stories, and find strength together, forever.

“As a result of counseling many grieving individuals and understanding how difficult it is for many to tolerate the painful emotions of mourning – it’s wonderful to have a place where families can honor their loved ones, share their memories, and continue their legacy,” explains Dr. Wayne Dees, creator of Registry of Life.com.

Registry of Life.com also features articles on bereavement and loss as well as recommended reading to help individuals cope with the normal but often difficult emotions that arise when dealing with loss: shock, denial, anger, guilt, sadness, and depression, while also helping the griever to move on through awareness, acceptance, and hope.

Registry of Life.com includes suggested readings that can help individuals find a productive means of coping, and more importantly, help their loved ones live on forever through their memories and images. Using the Registry can also be a great tool to help educate future generations about their family’s history.

“The Registry can help individuals in coping with the grieving process and to tell the life stories of their loved ones in words, pictures and music,” adds Dees. “We want people to have the opportunity and ability to commemorate the accomplishments and memories that celebrate life rather than focusing on loss.”

Drink to (for?) Your Health!

A study has found that fruity cocktails can actually be good for you. Ethanol added to fruits such as strawberries and blackberries boosted the antioxidant content.

Sounds fun, doesn’t it? Finally an excuse to go out an order a fruity drink at a bar. It’s healthy!

Not as appealing to me as to some, though. I’ve never developed a taste for alcohol in any form. Don’t care if others drink, just don’t want to myself.

TestFreaks Getting Ready for Launch

One of the most important things you can do when you shop online is compare prices and reviews of the products you are interested in. Often what you hear in the store just doesn’t match up with actual experiences. So a site such as TestFreaks sounds like a really good idea.

They’re going to offer reviews from both professional sources and from consumers posting on blogs and forums. This should give you a great range of experiences and thoughts on the products.

For example, right now they have a section on plasma tv reviews. The overall focus is on consumer electronics. If you’re shopping for a particular item, you may enjoy the site when it fully launches.

Right now the functionality is limited, and there’s a lack of range in the reviews, but give it time to grow. When they do their launch, the site should have a lot more to offer.
