End of the Religious Right? Yeah, Right!

I read an article over on Time about the end of the religious right. I can’t really say that I agree.

I don’t think I’m seeing what is talked about in the article, that is that churches are being more balanced between the political parties. I could be missing something but I haven’t really seen that. Read the rest of this entry »

What is Appropriate in Children’s Books?

There’s a big fuss going on right now about a Newberry Award winning children’s book that mentions the word “scrotum” in the story. The book is supposed to be for the 9-12 year old crowd, so not exactly young children who won’t know anything about their bodies.

But apparently to some this is a huge deal. Librarians are banning the book. You can read about the controversy and read comments about it on the New York Times website.

The book is The Higher Power of Lucky. While it’s not the flowers, rainbows and puppies kind of children’s literature, many people feel that it is inappropriate. Read the rest of this entry »

Just Torture!

I was watching last night’s “Iron Chef”. They were doing “Battle Chocolate”. Is there anyone out there who could watch such a show without craving some really good chocolate after?

Well, maybe my husband. But he had an upset stomach so he can be forgiven for it this time.

Lots of Tainted Food!

Feeling very lucky right now that nothing that has been recalled for contamination is in my home. So far…

Let’s see. Peter Pan Peanut Butter. Walmart’s peanut butter. Cantaloupes. Organic baby food.

What amazes me about the peanut butter one. Apparently it has taken a long time to be identified as a problem, possibly since bottles purchased in May 2006… or at least that’s from how far back they want you to throw bottles out. Read the rest of this entry »

I Want That Kind of Luck!

Well, I’d settle for a single larger win. Guess that means I’d actually have to play, though.

A man in Minneapolis has won two $25,000 lotteries in a row. Pretty amazing, no?

As I said, I’d take that kind of luck or even just a single, larger win. But I don’t generally play the lottery because I understand the odds all too well. And on my budget you don’t deliberately waste money.

Dusting My Computer

Just one of those keep busy kind of things. Well, actually it’s kind of necessary too.

My computer seems to be exceptionally sensitive to dust. I have to use one of those air cans on it every couple weeks or it starts shutting down at random times. It can be pretty frustrating.

I’ve never had a computer need cleaning so often. Most computers I just hauled out the old air can at random times, just whenever the thought struck. Not a couple times a month.
