Refocusing a Distracted Life

Everyone goes through times in their lives when it’s hard to maintain a focus on the things that normally really matter. There are all kinds of reasons for this, maybe you’re just tired from focusing on too many things or you’ve had to deal with a crisis. Whatever the reason the time comes when you have to take some time to refocus your life.

Sometimes that means taking a step back from all of it, even the things you want to focus on. A vacation is a great way to clear your mind and start thinking of the things that mean the most to you. It relaxes your body and mind, making it possible for you to return to what really matters.

But sometimes a vacation is not practical. You have to find other ways to regain your focus. Read the rest of this entry »

Supersize Who?

You’ve probably heard about that movie “Supersize Me” about the person who eats only at McDonald’s for a month and gains a lot of weight. Now a Swedish researcher has done the same and guess what? Not everyone gains the same, even when subjected to the same rules.

Now, I would first like to reiterate a point one person made in the comments, that Swedish McDonald’s is quite different from American. Even the sodas are different. I would also note that only 18 people participated, which is not exactly an ideal study size.

One volunteer did gain 15 pounds, but others only gained a little. Read the rest of this entry »

The Combination of Faiths is Fascinating

I read a story on MSN about a couple not wanting their child’s blood tested, as per state law in Nebraska, because it goes against their religious beliefs. Fine, I have no problem with that. Most states don’t absolutely require such testing; they merely strongly recommend it.

But what caught my eye was that their beliefs combine Christian Fundamentalism with some aspects of Scientology.

I must say, that is an odd sounding combination to me. It’s just hard for me to picture a fundamentalist Christian outlook blending with that of Scientology. Read the rest of this entry »

Let’s All Ban Al Gore’s Movie!

Just kidding. I’m not that crazy.

Seriously, I was reading over at Blogging Baby about the teacher who got into trouble for showing Al Gore’s movie about global warming. Seems some parent took offense, calling it offensive to our nation, “the greatest nation ever to exist on this planet.”

Now, I might respect the parent protesting this a wee bit more if it weren’t for his opinion on what’s causing global warming: Read the rest of this entry »

Good Job, Tyra!

It just amazes me the standards people hold models to. Outrageously slender. The recent criticism of Tyra Banks for her weight gain really highlights the problem.

I do understand that some women are just naturally that thin, the way runway models have little choice about being if they want to work. I used to be that way too. But for most people it is tremendously unhealthy, and trying to achieve such a figure is dangerous for many girls and women. Their body structure simply won’t support it in a healthy manner. Great Geek Valentine’s Gift!

I get emails from ThinkGeek.com . I love that site. Very appealing to me. But this Valentine’s Day gift idea really caught my fancy.

No, I’m not going to tell you where my fancy is. That’s private information.

These 1930’s Books of Love just look classic! I’m ordering them for my husband for Valentine’s Day. Don’t worry, he doesn’t know about this site, so I can say this safely.

We aren’t big Valentine’s Day people. My husband just grumbles about “Hallmark holidays” that is, holidays created by the card companies. I don’t have that problem but he matters enough to me that I don’t feel the need to push him on the matter.
