Watching the Contenders Line Up
Hoo boy, here we go again! Does anyone really care all that much who wants to be a Presidential nominee for the next election yet?
Honestly, this early in the game I watch the entire thing with a sense of amusement. John Edwards running for the Democratic nomination already. Others to follow when they get around to it and think the moment is right.
I have very little interest in who from either party plans on running right now. It’s a long time until we even have to worry about which nominees will actually run, and who knows what the situation will be at that point? Will the Iraq war be in better or worse shape? Will we have invaded anyplace else? How will relations with countries like North Korea or Iran be?
I’ll have more of an interest in the candidates on each side once I know more about the situations they are most likely to come into office with. And right now that’s just too far off.
For those of you wondering about my politics, I like to think of myself as middle of the road. I don’t like how the war in Iraq got started but firmly believe we need to finish it the right way. Can’t back out and leave the country in chaos. That’s asking for still more trouble.
I’d like to see saner tax policies but don’t know the right answer.
Despite having been robbed at gunpoint once myself I support legal gun ownership for the simple reason that it would be essentially impossible to change the rules now. They’ve been legal too long and there are too many guns out there. How exactly do you propose cleaning that up without giving criminals too big an advantage for too long a time?
I would rather help people learn to earn a living than give them one.
I would like to see a great deal of improvement in our environmental policies. I’m working on doing better on my own and helping my family do the same.
I have mixed feelings about government mixing with science. The government has the money to get things done when it really wants to but it’s also notorious for half measures.
I believe a woman should have control over her own body. However I also wish abortion were not so common and wonder if counseling would help. If so, how would it be monitored so that excessive use of guilt is not a problem?
All in all, I feel pretty comfortable being in the “someone else’s political part” party. I vote for who I think will get the job done, not so much by party.
