Unfashionably Thin?
I just love watching the concept of the ultra thin model be questioned. I’ve always worried about folks thinner than I was back in high school, because I was one of the naturally borderline underweight types, and so many models were thinner yet. Good thing I never wanted to be a model, isn’t it?
I was just reading an article about the steps being taken in Italy to discourage the used of excessively thin models. Looks like a pretty good way to handle it. Designers who insist on only using excessively thin models get penalized by getting the undesirable slots at fashion shows and such.
Apparently an obsession with being model thin is causing huge problems with anorexia in Italy. Something like 60% of 12-14 year old children there think they’re overweight. I’d rather kids that age not worry about their weight at all unless it’s serious.
People can talk all they want about how some women are just naturally that slender so it shouldn’t be a problem. I understand that some women are very slender naturally. I’m still fairly slender but no longer quite so thin as I was, and I still get that.
However, insisting that the women who show others what is fashionable be ultra slender just makes many other women feel that that is the standard of beauty that they should aspire to. And that is where the problem comes in.
I’ve never been a slave to fashion and never intend to be. But many girls and women look at models and want to look like that. If models can show a more realistic figure, I’m for it.
Heck, I’d love to see less airbrushing in the magazines too!
